The National Hospital Insurance Fund(NHIF) is a government corporation that provides medical covers to Kenyans over the age of 18, and membership can be through an employer, or one can apply individually. NHIF registration is eligible to members both from the formal and informal sectors. Some of the services that NHIF covers include, inpatient and outpatient services, maternity services, cancer treatment, renal dialysis among others.

What are the requirements for NHIF registration?

Before you can learn how to pay NHIF via M-Pesa you will need to register. For you to register through the NHIF portal and get a membership card, you are required to have the following documents:

  • Copies of National ID(For spouses and dependents if applicable)
  • A copy of the employer’s Introductory letter(This excludes those voluntary and self-employed contributors.
  • Colored Passport photos(For spouses and dependents if applicable)
  • Original and Copies of the birth certificate of the dependents

How do you make monthly payments?

After completing the NHIF registration through the NHIF portal, one of the many asked questions is how one can make their monthly NHIF contributions easily via Mpesa. Contributions for employees in the formal sector are automatically remitted by their employers. Below are the current premium rates for the employed categorized in various salary brackets (Income in gross pay);

Up to 5,999ksh to pay 150ksh

6,000ksh – 7,999ksh to pay 300ksh

8,000 ksh – 11,999 ksh to pay 400ksh

12,000ksh – 14,999ksh to pay 500ksh

15,000 ksh – 19,999ksh to pay 600ksh

20,000ksh – 24,999khs to pay 750ksh

25,000 ksh – 29,999ksh to pay 850ksh

30,000ksh  – 34,999ksh to pay 900ksh

35,000ksh  – 39,999ksh to pay 950ksh

40,000ksh  – 44,999ksh to pay 1,000ksh

45,000 ksh – 49,999ksh to pay 1,100ksh

50,000 ksh – 59,999ksh to pay 1,200ksh

60,000ksh  – 69,999ksh to pay 1,300ksh

70,000ksh  – 79,999ksh to pay 1,400ksh

80,000 ksh – 89,999ksh to pay 1,500ksh

90,000ksh  – 99,999ksh to pay 1,600ksh

100,000ksh and above to pay 1,700ksh

However, those in the informal sector can pay via bank or Mpesa. The contributions of voluntary and self-employed are Ksh. 500 per month. You can decide how many months you want to pay for. The most popular mode of payment is using Mpesa as it is easy and convenient.

How to pay NHIF via Mpesa

To access NHIF selfcare without issues, the following steps will help you on how to pay NHIF via Mpesa:

  1. Open your SIM Tool Kit and go to Mpesa Menu
  2. Go to Lipa Mpesa
  3. Select Paybill and enter 222222 as the business/pay bill number
  4. Enter your National ID number as your account number
  5. Enter the amount you want to pay
  6. Input your pin number and confirm the transaction then send
  7. After payment, you will get a  transactional message from Mpesa confirming your contribution.

How to check your NHIF status?

There are different ways to check your NHIF status, and these could be achieved through the NHIF portal, SMS and through email. However, the easiest way to check the status of your account using a mobile phone by carrying out the following steps:

  1. Compose a new SMS
  2. Type the letters “ID”, space, then your ID number.
  3. Send the SMS to 21101

As a result, you will get a reply showing your member number, your ID number, year of birth, your last contributions, and your dependents.
