Our Story
Workpay was founded in 2019 by Paul and Jack to simplify hiring, paying, and managing employees in Africa. Before Workpay, the founders were building business management tools. Working with these businesses revealed that payroll was a persistent and critical need. This insight led to the founding of Workpay.
Across Africa, payroll is very complex. Every country has its own tax rules, employment laws, currencies, payment systems, and compliance requirements. For companies operating in multiple markets, this complexity compounds quickly. Workpay was built to address that. As our customers grew, they didn't stop at payroll. They asked us to help them hire in new countries, navigate local employment laws, manage statutory obligations, and assess risk across distributed teams.That's why Workpay evolved from payroll software into a platform for hiring, paying, and managing teams across Africa, with Employer of Record (EOR) services, outsourced payroll, compliance, benefits, and workforce operations built into a single system.
Today, we help 1,000s of global companies and regional African businesses operate with confidence in 50+ African countries as their trusted payroll partner.In 2020, Workpay became one of the first companies founded in Kenya to join Y Combinator.
